Hawaii Publishers Go Digital as Demand for Print Falls

Pacific Journey Korea, a free Korean visitor publication available on Waikiki newsstands, became available online on Feb. 25. Since then, it has had 2,200 unique visitors and 29,500 page views.
The e-book helps Korean vacationers with pre-arrival plans and directs them to newsstands once they are in Hawaii.
“We wanted to add content to the Web site in a unique way and drive additional pick-up in Waikiki,” said Dave Erdman, president and CEO of PacRim Marketing, a communications group specializing in Asia. PacRim prints 15,000 copies of the Korean magazine, plus 10,000 and 100,000 in Chinese and Japanese, respectively.
As more content moves online, demand for printed material has dropped by as much as 30 percent, according to Hawaii printers and publishers. They are looking for new ways to survive with digital products and other technological advances.
